Boron
is a chemical element with atomic number 5 and symbol B. Boron is
said to be a low abundance element in both the Earth’s crust and
solar system, as it is produced directly by cosmic ray spallation and

ulexite. These ores can be refined into its pure chemical compounds
such as boric acid, anhydrous borax, anhydrous boric acid, borax
decahydrate and sodium pentahydrate among others. Some of the
commercially important boron minerals include datolite, kernite,
ulexite, hydroboracite, tincal and colemanite among others.
Some
of the major applications of boron ore include industrial scale uses
such as in borosilicate glass with trademark of Pyrex and in sodium
perborate bleaches. Boron ceramics and polymers have a significant
role as lightweight structural high-strength refractory materials.
They have application in the silica based glasses and ceramics that
gives them resistance to thermal shock. Its reagents are used as
intermediates in the synthesis of fine organic chemicals. Boron is
also used in the pharmaceutical industry specifically for few
applications that are under study.
